Cost?

Thank you for coming to me directly: it keeps the costs down for all of us.

Agencies typically charge you twice as much as they pay the tutor, pocketing the other half. By working with me directly for your one-on-one tutoring needs, you not only pay considerably less than you would through an agency, but you also make it possible for me to keep doing this very special job while looking after my own family. Thank you.

I know that my rates reflect my two decades of experience and expertise, and are not accessible to everyone. Consequently, I do offer discounts and am always willing to discuss needs-based sliding scales.

Another way to keep tutoring costs down is through group tutoring. Group tutoring offers students a chance to learn in a supportive environment of like-minded peers all focused on the same aim.

And although the experience is marginally less personal than 1-to-1 tutoring, there is an unexpected benefit to group tutoring:

It is easier to see mistakes in others than in yourself. But then, once you understand how they were able to fix them, it’s also easier to see how you can fix those problems for yourself.

By engaging in a group, students have the opportunity to learn even when they are not the one on the spot.

Why Hire Me?

Yes, I am yet another tutor with great grades and the ‘right’ academic resume (scholar at both Eton College and Oxford University) to prove it.

But that’s not why you should hire me.

…Nor because of my delightful British accent, or the fact that I can make your kid laugh at the same time as studying math.

You should hire me because I will be able to hear how your child thinks and then I adjust accordingly.

Tutoring is not “teaching”. What a lot of tutors do wrong is that they simply replicate what a teacher does, which is just more of the same.

The great privilege of tutoring is that I get to know how my student’s brain works.

By asking questions and listening carefully to answers – regardless of whether they’re right or wrong – I am able to “diagnose” where the student is getting confused or whether they’re doing things in an unnecessarily complicated way.

Consequently we can get to the root of whatever is holding them back and clear the path ahead of them for a burst of huge personal growth and confidence.

From my very first tutoring job I have been obsessed with understanding why some people find it easy to understand a concept, and some don’t; and then helping those who don’t “get it” to see the way forward.

With my unique experience, I hear tiny little clues that tell me exactly what is causing the mental block, and that lets me target the actual source of the student’s difficulties.

It’s noticeable that most people who understand concepts easily then struggle themselves to understand how other people don’t understand them just as easily, which is why intelligent people often don’t make great teachers.

You may conclude then that it makes sense for a struggling student to work with someone who also struggled to learn the concepts but ‘got there in the end’ through sheer determination and hard graft, i.e. the hard way. But these people are inclined to teach things the way they learnt them – the hard way – and not surprisingly, most kids are put off by that.

The sweet spot is when someone who truly understands the concepts also understands why someone else might not understand them; but then also to be able to ‘hear’ the student and tailor the explanation to fit them. This is the skill that I bring to the table, and why I enjoy this job so much.
